Criteria Builders
Any time you do an advanced query in RMS modules, you must build a Selection Criteria. A selection criteria is a list of Attributes and the Values of those attributes for which you are searching. Selection criteria can have few or many attributes.
As you build your custom query, it will appear in the Summary (all criteria) box (A).
Categories vs. Attributes
A major category is a type of information that has many sub-attributes. Examples of major categories include Cases, People, Property, Addresses, Organization, Weapons, Citations, and Warrants.
An attribute is some characteristic of a category. For example, in the Person category, there are attributes of Last name, First name, Case Role, Gender, etc..
And vs. Or
An AND-criteria is a criterion where all criteria items are true. For example, you could search for Persons who have attributes of Female AND under age 18. This search would return ALL people who are female AND also under 18 years old.
Another example of OR-criteria is shown within an attribute. For example, you could search Physical Descriptions for people with Blonde hair or Brunette hair or Red hair.

In QueryBuilder, a criteria-builder appears whenever you add or edit a major category. These criteria-builders are identical to those found throughout the suite and are used for creating “AND-criteria” within a major category and “OR-criteria” within an attribute. For example, the following criteria are built within a single criteria-builder within the Physical Description main category:
Example1:
Notice that there are two attributes (hair color and build) with an “AND” between them, and each attribute is one of two things (OR).
On the QueryBuilder main screen, the lower Add button (A) is for creating “OR” criteria within a major category. So, using the previous example, if you wanted to look for people with Blonde or Red hair *OR * people with Athletic or Lean builds, you would create the Hair Color criteria, and then Add another major category of Physical Description and populate the criteria-builder for the Build attribute.
Example2:
Notice that both sets of criteria are within the same major category (Physical Description), but that there is a clear “OR” relationship between the attributes.
The lower Extra button (A) is for creating “AND” or “OR” relationships among major categories. So, if you wanted to search for Female Victims (Person attributes) with blond hair (Physical Description attribute), you would build the Person criteria, and then Add Extra Physical Description criteria.
